Mick's Fly Box

Red Tag

This pattern has gained a reputation of being one of the best of its kind. Invented in Worcester, England in the middle of the nineteenth century, primarily as a Grayling pattern. By the turn of the century it found a growing list of followers in Australia.

By 1920 it was well established as a leading pattern for most of Australia’s trout holding waters. In Tasmania is has a special place in most fly boxes, for it is often used during major hatches of mayfly on the highland lakes.

Being what most flyflickers would consider a beetle representation, it is somewhat difficult to understand why the trout of Tasmania take it during a hatch of mayfly; I suppose when we can talk to those finny critters, we will know the answer.
